a case study on Functional Rural Design
The Creek:
Location: Spring Branch, Texas

Scope: New Build — Stables with Live-In Apartment
Style: Rustic Modern, Barn-Inspired
A DUAL-PURPOSE SPACE DESIGNED FOR LAND + LIFE
This project was designed as a working equestrian facility paired with a comfortable live-in residence — supporting both daily farm life and family use. The vision called for a space where horses could live safely and comfortably, while providing a welcoming home base for parents, children, and guests during visits and riding weekends.
The primary challenge was integrating two very different functions — stables and residential living — within a single structure, without compromising flow, safety, or comfort.
-
Prioritize animal safety, accessibility, and durability while creating a fully livable residential environment.
-
Design clear yet connected zones that allow the stable and living spaces to coexist seamlessly within one cohesive structure.
CAPTURING MODERN FARM LIVING
Animal-First Planning:
At least six custom stables were designed with the horses’ comfort, safety, and daily routines in mind, including durable materials, proper circulation, and immediate access to wash areas.
Thoughtful Integration:
A strategically placed shower near the stables allows for easy clean-off after riding, while the main apartment includes two bedrooms, full baths, and a complete kitchen and living space — creating a natural transition from work to rest.
Functional Flow:
Careful space planning ensures smooth movement between stable zones, storage, and living areas, keeping gear, animals, and people organized and protected.
TEXTURE-RICH, BARN-INSPIRED DESIGN
Durable Foundations:
Steel, concrete, metal, rubber flooring, white oak, and wood finishes were selected for their resilience, safety, and ability to withstand agricultural use.
Custom Details:
Bespoke stable builds and a custom integrated headboard in the primary bedroom bring craftsmanship and intentional design to both the working and residential areas.
Refined Rustic Palette:
A grounding mix of black, white, oak, and natural wood tones creates a modern barn aesthetic — rustic in feel, clean in execution.
MADE FOR FARM LIFE + FAMILY COMFOrt
Designed to support both animals and people, this dual-purpose structure functions beautifully as a safe, efficient stable and a comfortable retreat. Large windows and oversized modern light fixtures introduce natural light and visual openness, softening the utilitarian nature of the space.
Post-completion, the project delivers a balanced environment where horses are housed securely and the family can relax, gather, and enjoy time on the land — all within a single, thoughtfully designed building.
Grounded in function and elevated through design, this space reflects a deep understanding of rural living and the rhythms that come with it.
