A case study on Modern Contemporary Residential Design
Kailash Residence
Location: Austin, TEXAS
Size: 6,027 SQ FT
Completed: 2026
Scope: New Build
Style: Modern Contemporary, Nature-DrivenA FOREVER HOME DESIGNED AROUND THE VIEW
This project was envisioned as a serene, modern forever home — one that quietly frames its surroundings rather than competing with them. Set against a dramatic greenbelt backdrop, the design prioritizes openness, natural materials, and uninterrupted sight-lines throughout the home.
The primary challenge was the significant drop-off of the lot, requiring thoughtful positioning of the home, strategic circulation, and careful consideration of access, parking, and garage entry — all while ensuring the views remained the focal point from every major space.
-
Create a functional, livable home that supports daily routines while remaining calm, minimal, and family-friendly.
-
Work with the site’s slope to orient the home intentionally, capturing expansive views from nearly every room.
CAPTURING MODERN LIVING IN NATURE
View-Forward Planning:
The home was positioned to maximize sightlines across the greenbelt, with expansive windows placed throughout to ensure the landscape remains present from all primary living areas.
Architectural Restraint:
A modern, contemporary framework paired with a minimal design approach allows the home’s surroundings to take center stage, creating a sense of quiet luxury rather than visual excess.
Purposeful Spaces:
Special consideration was given to personal rituals and daily rhythms, including the integration of a dedicated temple room — thoughtfully placed to feel both intentional and serene within the overall layout.
TEXTURE-RICH, ORGANIC DESIGN
Natural Foundations:
Limestone and stucco were selected for both interior and exterior applications, grounding the home in organic materials that echo the tones and textures of the surrounding greenbelt.
Subtle Custom Elements:
Fixtures throughout the home were intentionally minimal — sleek, translucent, and low-profile — ensuring lighting and architectural details never obstruct the views.
Refined Minimalism:
Furniture and finishes follow a non-cluttered, cozy approach, balancing modern restraint with warmth. Selections were also made with everyday living in mind, including durability and dog-friendly materials.
MADE FOR QUIET MOMENTS + EVERYDAY LIFE
Designed to feel both expansive and intimate, the home supports daily living while encouraging pause and reflection. One standout solution includes a combined library office and reading nook, where custom-built shelving and a thoughtfully integrated desk maximize function without disrupting the room’s openness.
Post-completion, the home functions seamlessly as a peaceful retreat — light-filled, intentional, and deeply connected to its environment. What began as a challenge of topography ultimately became one of the project’s greatest strengths, allowing the architecture and interiors to unfold naturally with the land.
Rooted in restraint and guided by the view, this home is a study in balance — modern, organic, and designed to be lived in for years to come.
